Assistant Director of Nursing

Position Summary:

The primary purpose of your job position is to assist the Director of Nursing Services in planning, organizing, developing, and directing the day to day functions of the Nursing Service Department in accordance with current federal, state, and local standards, guidelines, and regulations that govern our facility, and may be directed by the Administrator, the Medical Director, and/or the Director of Nursing Services, to ensure that the highest degree of quality care is maintained all times.

Qualifications

This position requires a current valid license as a Registered Nurse issued in the state where the person will practice from an accredited school of nursing.

Two years of professional nursing experience in the long-term care setting is required, and a minimum of one-year experience in nursing administration or a comparable management position.

Must be able to demonstrate leadership and organizational skills, and provide positive attitude, direction, and discipline for the nursing staff.

Knowledge of long-term care management, policies, budgeting, personnel management, and census development is required.

Must have a thorough knowledge of the specialized procedures applied, and equipment used, in the assigned unit.

Up-to-date physical assessment skills and comprehensive knowledge of nursing principles are required.

Must be CPR certified. Infection Control Specialist Certification is preferred, but not required

Must be able to work weekends and available on an ?on-call basis?, if needed.

Physical Requirements

Must be able to stand, bend, stoop, push, pull, lift and walk continuously throughout the working day. 

Is subject to exposure to infectious waste, diseases, conditions, etc., including exposure to the AIDS and Hepatitis B virus. 

Ability to work with chemicals and cleaning agents. 

Is subject to work with medical and electrical equipment. 

Must be free from infection or diseases. 

May not have any restrictions/limitations in lifting, bending, stooping, pushing, pulling etc.

 Essential Functions: Exhibits ability to perform functions of providing the following.

Assists the Director of Nursing Services in planning, developing, organizing, implementing, evaluating, and directing the day-to-day functions of the nursing service department, in accordance with current rules, regulations, and guidelines that govern the long-term care facility.

Participate in developing, maintaining, and updating our written policies and procedures that govern the day-to-day functions of the nursing service department.

Assists in assuring the Nursing Service Procedure Manual is current at all times and reflects the day-to-day nursing care procedures used by this facility.

Communicates and interprets policies and procedures to nursing staff, and monitors staff practices and implementation.

Participates in admission decisions, and if needed, may visit prospective residents before admission.

Participates in daily or weekly management team meetings to discuss resident status, census changes, personnel, or resident complaints or concerns.

Assists in evaluating the work performance of nursing personnel and implements discipline according to operational policies.

Ensures delivery of compassionate quality care and nursing supervision as evidenced by adequate services and staff coverage on unit, absence of odors, general cleanliness, prevention of pressure wounds, and apparent maintenance of optimal resident functions.

Demonstrates knowledge of and application of Key Clinical Quality Indicators, assists with proactively monitoring and implementing systems to achieve and/or surpass company thresholds.

Reviews 24-hour report from every unit daily to monitor and ensure timely, effective responses to significant changes in condition, transfers, discharges, use of restraints, unexplained injuries, falls, behavioral episodes, and medication errors.

Under the direction of the Director of Nursing, collaborates with physicians, consultants, community agencies, and institutions to improve the quality of services and to resolve identified problems.

Assists in coordinating nursing services with all other departments including Therapy.

Oversees nursing schedules to assure they meet resident needs and regulatory and budgetary standards.

Participates in the recruitment and selection of nursing personnel and assures sufficient staff are hired.

Assists with the development and delivery of in-service education to equip nursing staff with sufficient knowledge and skills to provide compassionate, quality care and respect for resident rights.

Proactively develops positive employee relations, incentives, and recognition programs.

Promotes Teamwork, mutual respect, and effective communication.

Performs rounds to observe care and to interview staff, residents, families or other interested parties.

Monitors staff for compliance with OSHA mandates and facility policies on workplace safety.

Proactively develops procedures and incentives to promote workplace safety and safe work practices.
