There's a lot of debate out there about whether a cover letter or personal statement is more important when applying to jobs or colleges. Here's my two cents:
Both are important, but for different reasons. A cover letter is primarily about your qualifications for the position you're applying for. It's an opportunity to highlight your skills and accomplishments that are most relevant to the job at hand. In contrast, a personal statement is more focused on who you are as a person and why you're pursuing the opportunity in question. It's an opportunity to share your story, values, and goals, and how they align with what the organization is looking for.

Second, a cover letter is focused on your qualifications for the specific job or program you’re applying to, while a personal statement is moregeneral. Finally, a cover letter is written in a formal business style, while a personal statement can be more conversational.
When deciding whether to include a cover letter or personal statement with your application, consider both what the requirements are and what would give you the best opportunity to showcase your strengths.
